
I'm questioning if it is in fact a church in the guise of a gymnasium. I do not get the appeal and recognition of Crossfit.

It can get culty at some gyms among some contributors, no doubt. But I think there may be just too many of us who simply use it like a common fitness program and do not get stuck up. Also, it's easy to go away. Unlike cults, I've by no means heard of folks having any explicit trouble getting out.

They created a bunch of unnecessary gimmicks to create a cottage trade. Just do cardio and lift weights, there are NO health secrets or shortcuts.

Plus the basis of Crossfit - prime intensity period training (HIIT) - exists a ways beyond Crossfit gyms. Most gyms have HIIT based categories/coaching sessions and there's numerous home HIIT workout routines available - across a wide variety of equipment demands.
