I have a reasonably other interpretation on this one. Eddie Vedder had a step dad whom he hated and would beat his mom (betterman). The kid is Eddie, the young girl is his mom.
some reinforce.
"tries to make her proud" -shows the love the child has for his or her mom, as he is making an attempt to make her proud, now not avoid a beating.
"young girl... violins" -placing the young girl (aka. mother) on a pedistal
"shades go down, its in her head" -the sun shades cross down, as discussed ahead of to hide the domestic violence from the neighbors, then again "it's in her head" displays that those curtains aren't real, reasonably a coping mechanism that the mum uses to block out home from herself.
"Don't call me daughter, not fit to" - This confuses me, alternatively I feel that it will imply that the stepdad refers back to the little boy as daughter, as a demeaning time period, and he's not have compatibility to as he's only a step dad... or it generally is a little girl and her mother,,,
"the picture kept will remind me" - he has an outdated picture of his actual father to remind him that his step dad isn't his real father
"she holds the hand that holds her down" -In connection with her mom nonetheless being in love together with his stepdad in spite of the abuse
